Silk 6-Ply Woven Crepe in dark navy is a sturdy, heavy weight fabric with a slightly ridged surface and a beautiful sheen. It is usually used for high-end sportswear and home decor, but can also be used for tailored eveningwear and suiting. The "6-Ply" in the fabric's name refers to 6-ply crepe yarns made of 6 very tightly twisted strands of silk filament fibers used in the warp, or filling, direction of the weave. This also contributes to the subtle ridges visible on the fabric's surface. Although this fabric is structurally sturdy and is very well suited to any silk garment that requires a heavier, fuller look, 6-Ply Woven Crepe has the same beautiful and soft drape as its lighter cousins. This is available in a variety of colors.

Content:
100% Grade A Silk

Structure:
44/45" Wide
40mm
Plain weave w/4-ply crepe yarns in warp direction

Hand:
Slightly ridged and slightly pebbly texture on face side, smoother on back side - medium weight with soft drape

Luster:
Velvety sheen due to the way the silk filaments reflect light

Tips and Tricks:

  • This fabric is very forgiving and easy to sew – it ravels only slightly at the edges but all seams and hems should be finished anyway
  • Use with nap cutting layout (i.e. all pattern pieces laid out in the same lengthwise direction) so all pattern pieces reflect light the same way and shading is prevented.
  • Use standard stitch size and a sharp, fine needle when machine sewing – it’s best to use a new needle every time you start a project to ensure sharpness.
  • Great for tailored and structured garments
  • Use standard fusible interfacing when using this fabric – our lightweight fusible knit interfacing is perfect
  • Even when fully lining the garment, overlock (serge) seam allowances to prevent fraying
  • Depending on the garment, some of the finishes you can use are: overlock (serger), binding, rolled hem, hand-stitched or top-stitched hem. Since this fabric is thick avoid finishes that will create bulk from several layers.

Care:
Dry clean recommended; press on “silk” setting with steam.

Worth the price

This fabric is stunning- be it on the straight, the bias, or as a lining. It moves like a dream, is the perfect weight, and is sturdy. It's a little slippery to cut if not properly secured, it snags easily and it frays.

Pros: It's the perfect weight! And it moves so beautifully.

Cons: price

Beautiful drape, but snags easily

 Recommended Product

I used this for my wedding dress, which is a 1920s knee-length flapper-style dress. It drapes beautifully and has a lovely subtle sheen - so it's perfect if you want something that drapes well, but which doesn't highlight every lump and bump! It was quite tricky to cut, because the fabric is very slippery and it moved and pulled quite a lot. I had several interfacted sections in the dress, and I found that the fabric seemed to shrink up vertically with the iron-on interfacing. (I ironed on the interfacing through a cotton tea-towel, using the "wool" setting on the iron.) I found that the best solution to this was to cut the fabric pieces slightly larger than the pattern, then iron on the interfacting, and then mark the stitching lines with tracing paper from the paper pattern. This alleviated the shrinkage problem and also the fact that the fabric slid around quite a bit - and it made sure that the sticthing lines were accurate. The fabric sews very well using an fine 70-grade needle - I used regular seams with overlocked edges rather than French seams and it worked beautifully. The only downside to this fabric is that it pulls *very* very easily, so I've had to be super careful while working with it - and even so, I've still managed to get a couple of tiny pulls. So while it's perfect for a wedding dress (where you only wear it once, so if you sit on something or brush against something which makes the fabric pull it's not a big deal!) - I don't think it would be good for everyday wear.

Pros: Drapes beautifully, Lovely subtle sheen

Cons: Tricky to cut, Delicate - snags easily
